Concept Statement & Research

Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal is an examination of the interactions between the ceaseless, repetitive motions of an uncaring world and the people stuck living in it. In a time of isolation and overcrowding, the indifferent machine of society crushes a unique woman by means of alienation and patriarchal pressure in order to promote conformity. The play follows the journey of one Young Woman as she struggles to resist this machine but eventually succumbs to it.
